Now its’s one stroke after the other! The seventh volume of the Complete Critical Edition of Karlstadt’s Letters and Writings has been published in August 2024. It edits Karlstadt’s publications of 1524, which received the greatest attention and had the most widespread impact. His writings on the Lord’s Supper triggered the inter-Reformation controversy on that topic, which would result in the Reformation movement breaking up into diverse denominational parties. His contacts with Zurich indicate that he played an important role in the development of Anabaptism. The edition provides for the first time a plausible reconstruction of the genesis of the individual writings on the Lord’s Supper. Karlstadt’s expulsion from Electoral Saxony indicates that the emerging Protestant state church began to limit diversity of opinion. The congregational-Reformation type of reform represented by Karlstadt collided with the sovereign church government type represented by Luther.
