Volume 5 of the Karlstadt Edition covers his publications and letters of 1522. At the beginning of the year, Karlstadt dominated the debate in Wittenberg with writings on city and mass reforms, the welfare of the poor, the removal of images from churches, the clerical marriage and the dissolution of monastic vows. After Luther’s return from Wartburg Castle in March 1522, his writings were subjected to censorship. The fracture within the Wittenberg group of reformers became apparent, and Karlstadt’s position turned out to be isolated.
