The fourth volume of the Complete Critical Edition of Karlstadt’s Letters and Writings (KGK IV) will be published in Spring 2022. It includes texts from the decisive year of 1521, when Luther was at the Wartburg and Karlstadt worked with Philipp Melanchthon on the practical implementation of reform in Wittenberg. At the center of the volume are Karlstadt’s texts on vows, celibacy, communion and mass reforms, as well as polemical disputes concerning the indulgence festival in Halle. Many of the works show a close collaboration between the Wittenberg theologians. Nevertheless, Karlstadt developed his own type of theology, which closely followed the biblical account in the reform of worship and the distribution of the Lord’s Supper, but in matters of exegesis argued for a spiritual reading of the Bible.
