25 December 1521 – the first German evangelical mass

23. December 2021

500 years ago, on Dec. 25th 1521, Karlstadt performed the first evangelical mass in German language at the Schlosskirche Wittenberg, wearing secular clothes instead of his priest’s habit. As part of this mass he also officially celebrated the Lord’s supper in both forms in the presence of hundreds of Wittenberg people for the first time. This event marks the beginning of the practical church reform which – in the following years – spread from here all over the Holy Roman Empire.
The Team of the Karlstadt-Edition wishes you a wonderful Christmas and all the best for 2022, looking forward to seeing you in March in Wittenberg! Stay healthy!
